For awhile now action-movie posters have taken on one standard form: Hero with back to the audience stands ready to face the destruction all around him. And it's not that it makes for a bad poster, we've just seen it so many times that it's just getting tired. Maybe that's why this new Dawn of the Planet of the Apes poster turning its back on the turned-back trend stands out so much to us.
Or maybe it's because it features a chimpanzee holding an assault rifle while riding on a horse away from the Golden Gate Bridge as it begins to crumble in flames.
Yeah, we're going to go with that last one.
And wow, do we love that 20th Century Fox is not afraid to embrace the inherent craziness of a movie franchise about apes overthrowing mankind. We wish some other studios out there would be as indulgent with their marketing as Fox has been with Matt Reeves' follow-up to 2011's surprisingly great Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Now we just have to decide if we want to get this tattooed on our chest or painted on our van.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on July 11, 2014.
