'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' Images Reveal an Army of Apes on Horses

Apr 09, 2014

A small group of survivors and a growing family of apes led by Andy Serkis’ Caesar (who has been enhanced with an artificial intelligence) attempt to rebuild their lives after a devastating plague in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The humans, led by Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke and Keri Russell, form a new colony in a deserted part of San Francisco, while the apes grow their own society in Muir Woods. There, Caesar teaches them skills like sign language and how to ride horseback.
"We've got apes on horses," director Matt Reeves recently told USA Today. "There is a sense in the beginning of the movie that apes have inherited the Earth. You see the species as it takes dominion over the planet. It's an ape world. That's the fun of it." But as anyone who has seen the 1968 film Planet of the Apes knows, it won’t be much fun for the humans. "We all know it doesn't become Planet of Humans and Apes," Reeves stated. "It becomes Planet of the Apes. But this is that one moment of time where there is hope for humans.”
Reeves has assembled a fine team to bring the apes to life and find that unique balance between simian and human in each actor's performance. Stunt coordinator and movement choreographer Terry Notary, a former Cirque du Soleil performer, is helping to cast the apes. Actors are already suited up in motion-capture outfits while Reeves and company shoot in the forests of Vancouver and outside New Orleans. Serkis spoke to the outlet about how the upcoming film centers around “the notion of family — the survival of the family and what lengths you would go to protect them when life is extremely hard and tough."
We'll see which family survives the war in theaters on July 11.
