Awesome Art Reveals What 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' Almost Looked Like

Jul 14, 2014

How many of you watched Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and completely loved it? Okay, judging by how many have your hands raised, that seems like all of you. The sequel to the 2011 prequel went bananas at the box office, scoring the top spot with over $70 million, besting the opening of Rise of the Planet of the Apes by almost $20 million. Clearly this franchise isn't monkeying around. (That's the last ape pun--we promise!)

Films with an incredible amount of motion-capture effects like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes go through a pretty rigorous preparation process, which includes lots of concept art featuring alternate designs that differ from the final version. Like this:

The team of conceptual artists assembled for Dawn were so good that many of their initial designs made it into the movie.

Here, artist Jerad S. Marantz explains: "Many times I work on the show there is a lot of back-and-forth in the design process. You submit an image and then you get a lot of notes. This was not the case with the Koba design. In the very first pass I got the character through and the design went straight to Weta. That's only happened two other times in my career but never on such a big blockbuster film."

Koba, played by Toby Kebbell, was one of the highlights of the movie and certainly a fan favorite, thanks to the complexities of his character.
