David Yates Developing Big Screen 'Doctor Who,' Will the Show be Involved?

Nov 14, 2011

Dr. WhoHere's a surprising nugget of news: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows director David Yates is working with BBC Worldwide Productions to develop a big screen adaptation of the immensely popular (and undying) BBC series Doctor Who. Having said that, take this story with a glacier of salt; not because the sources involved are unreliable, but because reliable sources aren't all saying the same thing.

Variety broke the news about Yates' involvement after speaking directly to Yates, who told the trade, "We're looking at writers now. We're going to spend two to three years to get it right. It needs a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena." And it's kind of hard to misconstrue the meaning of his words. That's not some out of context quote about Yates being a fan of the scarf-sporting Time Lord. It's pretty clear he and the BBC are making a Dr. Who movie, it'll be different from the show, and they're going to take their sweet time getting it right.

However, it wasn't just fans of the franchise who were surprised when Variety broke the news. So were several entities directly involved with the long-running show. TheMarySue.com has done an excellent job of rounding up the surprise from industry insiders like Doctor Who Magazine and BBC Senior Brand Executive Edward Russell saying that this wasn't any different than the rumors that always pop up that a movie is getting made. However, BBC America's official twitter account chimed in, saying that the film is in development in LA.

Now, this level of miscommunication between the LA-based film production and the UK-based television production isn't too alarming. You'd think they'd all be on the same page, but the reality is that even though they're all essentially on the same team, they're not all working the same project, so to speak. Of course, it doesn't help that the last post-Potter project that Yates was supposed to be developing - a big screen adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand - just up and vanished into thin air (last reports pegged Ben Affleck as WB's new choice to direct), so don't be surprised if this project also goes radio silent after the initial news break.

But, putting the high degree of uncertainty aside, what do you think of David Yates taking on a big screen Doctor Who? And how would you like a movie to differ from the television series?
