Venus in Fur

Janis Sings the Blues: To play legendary singer Janis Joplin, the folks behind the upcoming bio-pic Joplin have cast Nina Arianda, who quickly rose to fame on the basis of her Tony-winning performance in the steamy stage drama Venus in Fur (above, with Hugh Dancy). She had supporting roles last year in Win Win, Higher Ground, Midnight in Paris, and Tower Heist. The film covers the last six months of Joplin’s life; Arianda will sing her songs. In addition, Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene) has been hired to direct. [Deadline]

Who’s the Boss: White House-themed thriller Olympus Has Fallen has been casting up a storm in preparation for a September start date, but its thematic competitor White House Down is ready to strike back. James Woods is in “early talks” to play Channing Tatum’s boss; Tatum is already set to star as an agent who must defend the President (Jamie Foxx) when the White House is attacked by a paramilitary group. The last time Woods was in the White House, he was advising the President as H.R. Haldeman in Oliver Stone’s Nixon. [Showblitz]

Mystery Movie: Novels and stories by the late British mystery writer Agatha Christie have inspired more than 120 movies and TV shows, but precious few on the big in recent years. Director Neil LaBute (Death at a Funeral) aims to change that; he’s gearing up to start filming an adaptation of Christie's 1949 novel Crooked House later this year. The story follows a Scotland Yard detective as he investigates the murder of a wealthy patriarch, with grave suspicion falling upon the man's family. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisition has now picked up North American rights to the film. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Goat Man: Hoping to overcome a mixed reaction at Sundance, coming-of-age comedy Goats starts rolling out to theaters next month. A new trailer establishes a quirky tone and gives us a good look at David Duchovny as (inspirational, we hope) Goat Man; Vera Farmiga, Justin Kirk, and Graham Phillips also star. [Yahoo! Movies]
