Credit goes to LucasFilm for the great timing of it all, as they get set to bring back one of the Star Wars franchise's most intriguing characters immediately after his return to theaters helped Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace become the first individual Star Wars film to cross $1 billion in worldwide box office. Yes, we're talking about Darth Maul, who will somehow rise from the dead and return to exact revenge in an upcoming four-episode story arc for Cartoon Network's Clone Wars animated series, beginning tonight. The show, which is a lot more entertaining than some may think, just debuted the below trailer promoting Maul's return, and it rocks pretty hard. We're not sure how they're going to justify the character's return following his outcome in Phantom Menace, but this trailer definitely makes us want to find out.
Meanwhile, Darth Maul's first and only live-action appearance has helped propel Phantom Menace to over $1 billion in worldwide box office, positioning it to pass The Dark Knight in a matter of days to become the 10th highest-grossing film of all time (not counting for inflation). As far as the 3D re-release goes, we guess its $73.4 million (so far) is a success, and it should be enough to pave the way for Attack of the Clones to arrive in 3D next year, at the very least.
