After several images and posters were revealed, here comes the first trailer for Tim Burton's next film, Dark Shadows, based on the popular cult sci-fi television series of the 1960s and early '70s. Chock-full of the sort of demented touches we've come to expect from Burton's work, this trailer really plays up the film's laughs, as Johnny Depp plays a vampire named Barnabas Collins who is cursed by a witch (Eva Green) two centuries ago and awakes in the 1970s to a completely different world that's not at all familiar to him. After befriending the odd folks (lead by Michelle Pfeiffer) living in his old estate, Barnabas sets out to destroy the witch who's still trying to make him disappear forever. And apparently the whole thing will be set to a bunch of iconic '70s hits.
While it definitely looks playful (we're loving the vampire sex scene featuring Depp and Eva Green flying all over the place), we get a sense this might be a little too silly and playful for Burton fans, but we'll hold our comments and concerns until we're able to watch the entire movie. Regardless of whether this is funnier (and kinda spoofier) than some may have hoped for, visually it looks like a blast (and perhaps even Beetlejuice-esque); the perfect material for Burton to adapt.
Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think. Dark Shadows hits theaters on May 11th.
