We’re not gonna lie – we totally thought this was another in a long line of April Fools' Day pranks, but this story appears to be legit…and awesome.
Dark Horse Comics has revealed that it's working on plans to bring George Lucas’ original version of Star Wars to the page. That’s right, at long last, fans will finally get to meet Annikin Starkiller and see what Lucas originally envisioned for the series.
The comic company will be working with J.W. Rinzler, and Avengers artist Mike Mayhew, to create a full version of The Star Wars – based on Lucas’ rough draft script penned several years prior to the version we all know and love.
Fans have long known of the existence of this early draft of the story, but Lucas was always hesitant to let anyone do anything with it. Rinzler explains how it all came about.
“His first complete imaginings were hallucinating to read—mind-blowing. While working with George on another book project, I once asked if we could adapt his rough draft. He was hesitant. Years later, with Dark Horse’s invaluable help, we showed him a few drawn and colored pages of what it might look like. He gave us the okay.”
The Star Wars features many familiar names and concepts (laser swords instead of “lightsabers”, Han Solo, etc.), but very little of it is like what we all know and love. Han Solo is an alien lizard. Luke Skywalker is an older Jedi general. Young Jedi Annikin Starkiller headlines the tale, taking on the evil Sith knights… Needless to say, it’s familiar, but also very different.
Fans have long assumed the story would never be told because Lucas was so opposed to sharing it, but it turns out that we’ll all get to see it when the eight-issue comic series launches in September. Check out some of the early art above and below.
