2014 has been a particularly slim year for great horror movies, at least as far as Hollywood is concerned. As always, fans have to turn to the festival circuit to find the indie and international gems that prove there's still plenty of fresh blood in the genre, and so far this year that's included movies like Exists, Starry Eyes, Housebound, Oculus and The Babadook.
Having seen the above, I can attest all are quite worthwhile. However, they look like mere appetizers for Cub, a Belgian film that will soon have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Directed by Jonas Govaerts, Cub is about a Cub Scout troop on a camping trip that comes across what seems like a feral child in the woods. That sounds like a rather generic setup, but if this trailer is any indication, Govaerts is squeezing every last ounce of promise out of that premise to deliver something bold and big and adventurous and terrifying.
Seriously, how good does this look? Answer: It looks all good. All of it. Every last atom of good.
