For some of you—and you know who you are—Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon arriving on Blu-ray on July 14 was like having Chinese New Year in July. The 2000 wuxia (part historical epic, part martial arts film mixed with fantasy elements) classic starring Chow Yun-Fat, Michelle Yeoh and Ziyi Zhang was a tremendous international hit and Best Picture Oscar nominee. The good news is that if you don’t already own the BDs of Curse of the Golden Flower and House of Flying Daggers, those excellent wuxia films come bundled with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The bad news is that the bundled versions of both Curse of the Golden Flower and House of Flying Daggers are exactly the same as the ones that have been available for some time, and the only way to get the new Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon right now is to buy it in this Sony set with the other movies you already own. Blu-ray Bob acknowledges that this kind of marketing is infuriating, to say the least, but he is here to help. If you don’t want to wait for the individual domestic release of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which has yet to be announced, Blu-ray Bob recommends browsing a few international websites for the UK Blu-ray version. It comes packaged in an attractive steelbook case, has tons of extras and, most importantly, is region free so it will play perfectly on your domestic Blu-ray player or PS3.
