Craig Gillespie Bails on 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' -- Will the Film Ever Get Made? (Updated)

Aug 30, 2011

UPDATE: Twitch, who first broke this story, is now reporting that they've received a phone call from Gillespie's reps that claim he's still on the movie and hasn't left the production. Chalk this up to someone receiving some bad info, we suppose.

It's been a tough road for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, as Lionsgate tries terribly to piece together an adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's novel that recreates the world of Pride and Prejudice and adds a zombie subplot to the mix. On paper it's a really tough concept to see succeeding at the box office because the majority of the people who love zombie flicks don't dig Pride and Prejudice, and the majority of people who want to get lost in the world of Elizabeth Bennet in 19th-century England aren't the same folks who want to chomp down on a good zombie movie. That's just what it is.

And perhaps some of these problems are what's plagued the production since its start, with Craig Gillespie (Fright Night) becoming the third director to bail, according to Twitch. Both David O. Russell and Mike White previously left the project, which at one time was trying to cast a number of female actresses, like Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Emma Stone, Rooney Mara and Olivia Wilde, however none have worked out. Portman is producing the film as well, though her pregnancy is probably playing a factor in her not taking the role. Even though she would've given birth by the film's planned start time in January, we imagine she'll want to take some time off to spend with the little one.

So now what do they do? Well, Lionsgate can either scrap the project all together, or they can start from scratch and go after another director and another star. Perhaps pushing the start date and waiting for Portman to be ready is the best bet. What do you think the problem is with this one? Have you read the book? Is it a difficult one to adapt for the big screen?
