Couples Retreat Uses Laughs as Marital Therapy

Couples Retreat Uses Laughs as Marital Therapy

Dec 22, 2009

While Couples Retreat might not have been the funniest comedy of the year or even the most memorable on-screen teaming of real-life BFFs Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn, it’s still “so money” to see moviedom’s original Swingers back together in a film. In Couple’s Retreat—directed by Peter Billingsley and written by Favreau, Vaughn and Dana Fox—the characters played by Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell book a vacation to a marital-therapy retreat after many failed attempts to conceive put a strain on their relationship. The couple invites their married friends (Vaughn and Malin Akerman, Favreau and Kristen Davis, Faizon Love and Kali Hawk) to the resort called Eden to take advantage of the amenities, but they soon discover that no relationship is perfect—and that is really OK.

Universal is bringing Couples Retreat—its second-biggest hit of the year with a domestic gross of over $107 million—home on February 9 on both DVD and Blu-ray. Special features include commentary with Billingsley and Vaughn, an alternate ending “Back in Chicago,” a gag reel, “Therapy’s Greatest Hits,” “Paradise Found: Filming in Bora Bora” and “Behind the Yoga.” Curiously, this will not be one of Universal’s new flipper discs with a BD on one side and DVD on the other, but the BD version will include a digital copy of the movie for you to take on the plane to the couples retreat of your choosing. Blu-ray Bob suggests you pick somewhere warm and expensive. You’re welcome.
