Confirmed! Disney's 'Mary Poppins Returns' Gets Christmas Release Date

Emily Blunt / Lin-Manuel Miranda

We first heard about Disney's plans to develop a new take on Mary Poppins last fall. As announced at the time, Rob Marshall was set to direct and the story would take place some 20 years after the events depicted in the wildly popular 1964 family musical starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.

Emily Blunt was quickly touted for the lead role in the sequel, which made sense since she and director Marshall had just worked together on the musical Into the Woods. Blunt demonstrated her vocal talents in the movie.

By February, Blunt was officially in talks for the role. We also heard that Lin-Manuel Miranda (Broadway sensation Hamilton) was in talks to costar as Jack, described as "a lamplighter resembling the character of Bert, famously played by Dick Van Dyke in the 1964 classic."

Miranda first broke out big with his stage musical In the Heights, which opened on Broadway in 2008. A big-screen adaptation was under development until 2011, but now it's been revived by The Weinstein Company, according to Variety. Miranda, who wrote the songs and starred in the stage production, will help produce the movie version.

Mary Poppins

Meanwhile, we've now received confirmation that Blunt and Miranda will star in a sequel that has been officially titled Mary Poppins Returns. As previously announced, David Magee (Finding Neverland) is writing the screenplay, drawing from a series of books by P.L. Travers. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray) will compose new songs.

Travers wrote eight novels in total about Mary Poppins; the first was published in 1934 and the other books followed from 1935 to 1988. The movie sequel will "will take place in Depression-era London (when the books were originally written) and follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives."

Mary Poppins Returns will open in theaters on December 25, 2018.
