Cool Concept Art Reveals Which Villain Got Axed from 'Spider-Man 2'

Jan 03, 2013

Spider-Man 2 posterWe love concept art here at Movies.com. It often gives us an idea about what a filmmaker is envisioning for a movie before he actually starts filming -- even if the actual characters and images look radically different in the finished product – and occasionally teases us with things that might have been.

The latter is the case with today’s reveal of Constantine Sekeris’ design for the Lizard. The lithe monster (pictured below) is one of Spider-Man’s major enemies – and was his foe in Marc Webb’s 2012 reboot of the franchise. The catch here is that Sekeris’ art wasn’t for The Amazing Spider-Man – it was actually commissioned for Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2.

Early on in the development of that sequel, there were plans to have not only Doc Ock as a villain, but to also have Dr. Curt Connors undergo his lizard transformation in that film as well. Screenwriter Michael Chabon eventually suggested they focus primarily on Doctor Octopus, but this concept art remains as a reminder of how the film might have been radically different.

Honestly, we’re glad they nixed this idea. The art is cool – except that Lizard’s head looks wrong in the first image – but the real issue is having too many villains, which was a problem for the third Spidey movie Raimi made.

Let us know what you think of this art and the idea of Lizard appearing in Raimi’s second film. Tthen swing by Sekeris’ website, where he features all kinds of cool concept art for things like the Silver Surfer, the werewolf from Cabin in the Woods, and Freddy Krueger from the Nightmare on Elm Street remake.
