Fantastic Four

We've got late-breaking news, a production update and big-budget action heading for the small screen. Let's get to it!

Doctor Doom

We first saw the villainous Doctor Doom on the big screen more than 10 years ago in Fantastic Four, portrayed by Julian McMahon (above). McMahon reprised the role in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer two years later. The character returned for Josh Trank's Fantastic Four in 2015, known simply as Doom and played by Toby Kebbell.

Now he'll finally star in his own movie, apparently. Noah Hawley (TV's Fargo and Legion) appeared at Comic-Con and announced, per Birth Movies Death: "I'm developing a movie at Fox, and I'll just say two words to you guys: Doctor. Doom."

No other details have been announced. The last version of Fantastic Four did not fare too well, either with critics or moviegoers, so this sounds like a good way to approach the venerable characters from a fresh perspective. We'll keep our ears open for any additional hints about the project.

Shazam

Lights Out

Ahead of Comic-Con, a big-screen version of DC comic book series Shazam didn't look likely to launch anytime soon. Now, though, a director has been confirmed and a production start date has been targeted.

David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, above with producer James Wan) will direct Shazam, per Cinema Blend. Sandberg "casually confirmed" an earlier report, stating: "It's coming along pretty well." Production is expected to begin in January or February next year, according to The Hollywood Reporter, aiming for theatrical release in 2019.

Sandberg also directed Annabella: Creation, which screened on Wednesday night at Comic-Con to good reaction. Dwayne Johnson was previously attached to Shazam to portray the villainous Black Adam, but that is now up in the air.

Bright

Based on an original script by Max Landis (American Ultra), Bright is set in a world where humans live side by side with fantasy creatures, such as fairies, trolls and orcs. Will Smith stars as a human police officer who must team with an orc law-enforcement officer (Joel Edgerton) to track down a powerful but dangerous magic wand.

Smith reteams with director David Ayer (Suicide Squad) for the movie, which will debut on Netflix. Smith has been a vocal advocate for the streaming service, which has generated a ton of talk at Comic-Con, especially after the trailer debuted. Watch it below; Bright will premiere on December 22.
