How the Next 'Cloverfield' Movie Became a 'Cloverfield' Movie

May 17, 2017

There's another Cloverfield movie coming out this Fall, and there's some new information available on how it came about. Here's everything we know about the third installment in the franchise:

Was this movie conceived as a Cloverfield sequel?

No, and technically it's not a sequel to the original Cloverfield or 10 Cloverfield Lane. It's just the latest of a certain kind of movie, like an episode of a Twilight Zone type series. Initially written as a spec script titled God Particle, the movie even went into production (and had been scheduled to release back in February) before being looped into the franchise and re-labeled "Cloverfield Movie."

So did it have to be reconfigured during production?

According to its co-writer Oren Uziel in a new interview for Collider, "We rewrote during production, but I’m not sure what it means to be part of the expanded Cloverfield universe, other than knowing what kind of quality and feel you’re gonna get from something that’s coming out of Bad Robot and J.J." He stresses the rewrites didn't really change the movie's content much.

Is it weird for a movie to be reworked to fit a franchise like this?

Original scripts and adaptations of unrelated novels have been turned into sequels to other movies many times. Just see the origins of Die Hard and Die Hard 2 for good examples. But those were refitted for specific characters and an ongoing story. The Cloverfield idea is more just taking a kind of movie and affixing a brand name.

What is the purpose of doing that?

As Uziel puts it, "It’s very smart and also great for makers of science fiction because it relieves you of that burden of like, ‘How are we gonna get people to get off their asses and into the movie theater to see something they’re not sure [of]?’ It’s not a guarantee; the cast is different, we don’t know exactly what we’re getting, but if that stamp of approval of being part of the Cloverfield universe is enough, that’s a huge win."

What exactly is this "Cloverfield Movie" about?

Plot details are still a secret, but five years ago God Particle was described as being about a space station crew dealing with the sudden disappearance of Earth, caused somehow by the Large Hadron Collider, and then the sudden appearance of a possibly unfriendly European ship. Officially all that's known is the movie is indeed set on a space station where a team of astronauts have to survive some kind of threat.

That's some vaguely familiar territory, especially for a year in which we've also seen Life and Alien: Covenant. But Uziel explains that the plot isn't what's important to him. "I guess for me sometimes those movies tend to be more concerned with whatever the obstacle is," he tells Collider, "and I’m more concerned with the characters’ relationships to each other and [to] that obstacle, I guess. So to me, when you say it’s a contained astronaut movie, I’m just curious what those astronauts are going through and what they’re experiencing and what the character story is, and what specifically the threat is is often less of a concern to me.”

Well, who is in it?

David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Bruhl, Ziyi Zhang, Chris O'Dowd, John Ortiz, Aksel Hennie and Roger Davies.

When does it come out?

October 27
