In advance of The Avengers arriving on DVD and Blu-ray this September 25, Movies.com had the chance to chat up Clark Gregg, who played S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson throughout Marvel's "Phase One" in films like Thor, Iron Man, Iron Man 2 and The Avengers. Unfortunately for Agent Coulson, however, the character was killed off in The Avengers, effectively ending Gregg's all-too-brief Marvel stint, or so we thought.
Since The Avengers, there have been several theories that Agent Coulson isn't really dead, or that we may see him return as a character called the Vision, an android who operates with the brain patterns of other Marvel characters. A fan even went so far as to create a bust of Coulson as the Vision (see it below), but is there any truth to these rumors? Could we see Coulson return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe either in "Phase 2" or in that upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show?
"I don't know if we'll see Agent Coulson again, but I certainly do his voice in their animated series, The Ultimate Spider-Man, and you never know, there may be a flashback or something sometime," Gregg told us. "I really hit it off with those guys [at Marvel], and I've talked to them lately about some ways I can continue to work with them, perhaps as a writer or director."
We mentioned to Gregg that Agent Coulson would've been perfect for the recently announced S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show, to which he replied, "You know what, that was the moment when I went, 'Great, they're doing the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show and I'm on a slab!'" As far as the Vision goes, Gregg says he's seen the rumors online and finds the images of Coulson as the Vision "hilarious" and "actually really moving."
He adds, "You know the Vision is synthetic with a soul, sort of, and he's an amazing character who I loved when I used to read those comics. I love the idea of Coulson as that guy, but I don't know if that's in the cards."
We'll have much more with Clark Gregg as we inch closer to The Avengers DVD/Blu-ray release on September 25.
