Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant Might Have More Bite at Home

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant Might Have More Bite at Home

Dec 24, 2009

Is there any blood left to drain from the vampire genre? Between The Twilight Saga: New Moon and the upcoming Daybreakers in theaters and TV’s True Blood and The Vampire Diaries, bloodsuckers seem to be well represented on both the big and small screen. Maybe this fang saturation is why director Paul Weitz’s Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant didn’t exactly hit an artery at the box office. The film adaptation of the popular The Saga of Darren Shan books is about a teenager (Chris Massoglia) who unknowingly breaks a 100-year-old truce between two warring factions of vamps. Co-stars include John C. Reilly, Ken Watanabe, Willem Dafoe and Salma Hayek, the latter two of whom know their way around a vampire flick in Shadow of the Vampire and From Dusk Till Dawn, respectively.

Universal hopes Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant bleeds more dollars from wallets at home than the $13.7 million it made in theaters when the studio brings this oddball fantasy comedy to DVD and Blu-ray on February 23. Extras on both versions are anemic: deleted scenes, “Guide to Becoming a Vampire” and “Tour du Freak.” Since the studio listed different prices for the DVD and BD, we’re assuming this won’t be one of Universal’s new flipper discs with a DVD on one side and BD on the other. For fans who could use both a high-def and standard-def version, that really bites.
