Cine Latino: You're Invited! Five Reasons to Watch the ALMA Awards

Sep 21, 2012

Cine Latino covers, well, all things relating to Latino culture and the movies, every Friday.

Kicking off Hispanic Heritage Month is the 2012 NCLR ALMA Awards, honoring entertainers who have promoted a positive Hispanic image in today's media culture. Eva Longoria and George Lopez will return as cohosts of the show, which airs at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and celebrates our favorite Latinos in music, television and film.  Some of the nominees include, Salma Hayek, Zoe Saldana, Eva Mendes, Rodrigo Santoro and Diego Boneta.

So, without further ado, here are five reasons why you should tune in to watch the ALMA Awards tonight.

Hosts with the Most: George Lopez and Eva Longoria have hosted the show before and if you've watched previous ceremonies you'll know why they're such a dynamic duo. Expect many wardrobe changes from Longoria, a few dance routines and of course Lopez's over-the-top humor.

Presenters: This year's presenter lineup is packed with big Hollywood names. Expect to see Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, Nicole Richie, Zoe Saldana, Ryan Lochte, Robert Rodriguez, America Ferrera, Wilmer Valderrama and Natalie Morales.

Honored: Burlesque star Christina Aguilera will receive the 2012 NCLR Special Achievement Award for her successful career and exceptional work in philanthropy. No stranger to the ALMA Awards, Aguilera has received 10 ALMA nominations and taken home three ALMAs. She recently began her third season as a talent coach on NBC's The Voice.

2012 Olympic Tribute: Ryan Lochte will be one of six Latino Olympic medal winners from London's 2012 Olympic Games to be saluted for their achievements. In case you're wondering how Lochte fits into the equation, his mother is Cuban.  Others being honored are water polo champs Brenda Villa and Jessica Steffens, men's gymnastics' Danell Leyna, track and field's Leonel Manzano and boxing champ Marlen Esparza.

Performances: Flo Rida, whose recent hits "Whistle" and "Wild Ones" have dominated the music charts, will be performing with Puerto Rican actress Rosalyn Sanchez.  No word on what song the duo will be performing. Also, singing their hearts out will be Martina McBride and Luis Fonsi.

If you're thinking of throwing an ALMA Awards watch party, here are a few ideas that might spice up your festivities. The official site has a party tool kit that includes trivia, yummy recipes, best-dressed games, a discussion guide on Latinos in Hollywood and a social media guide so you can join the conversation on Twitter and Facebook.

Don't forget to look up the ALMA sangria recipe, which looks especially promising, and the ALMA shrimp ceviche cocktail. Yum!
