Cine Latino: Is Singer and Reality TV Star Larry Hernandez the Next Big Latino Movie Star?

Aug 21, 2013

Cine Latino covers, well, all things relating to Latino culture and the movies, every Wednesday.

One of Latin America's most popular regional Mexican music stars (think country western), Larry Hernandez has reached another career high as the star of mun2's reality TV show Larrymania, which in one season became the network's number one show with 2.5 million viewers. He returns this year with season two, which airs on Sunday nights and captures a more in-depth look at his family life, his biggest concert tour to date (Larryvolucion 2013) and plenty of antics.

Here's what he had to say about fame, if he'd get into the movie game and who his favorite Latino stars are. Oh, and get this, he's a Titanic lover.

Here are a few highlights:

On what fans can expect of Larrymania season two: "The show is an inside look at my family life and work relationships. For the first season we only shot 10 episodes and this season we're shooting 15 episodes and showcasing my home life a little more, my relationship with my kids, the interactions with my fans, and the countless cities that I travel to. We try to tape most of my performances to allow people to see a few musical acts but also give them a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to set up every show."

On the first movie he ever watched: "As a child I didn’t have the opportunity to go to an actual movie theater to see a movie. I grew up in a ranch in Mexico and at the time movie productions would come to town and put up a giant canvas to screen movies. I think the first film I watched was Operacion Marihuana with Mario Almada. I was about 11 years old. I like watching those kinds of movies that deal with contraband, drugs and action."

On a family movie outing with his kids: "With my kids it's another story. They like watching Rio, Spider-Man, Batman and the Hangover movies. I think it's great that I can watch some more adult movies with my kids and just have a good time laughing. It's a bit tough to actually go to a movie theater with my kids because there are always fans trying to take pictures with me."

On his hugely viral mun2 El Presidente promo: "In only 10 days it has half a million views. The video is to spark the notion of what it would be like if we had a Latino president."

On dealing with fame: "It definitely doesn’t come natural to me. I don’t like to think that I have success or fame. I like it when people meet me and say, 'Wow, even though he's in TV and has a successful career, he's still like one of us.' I always try to show my fans through Larrymania that I'm just like them. I'm not 'in Hollywood.' My respects to all who have made it in Hollywood but I just going to stay focused on my work."

On transitioning to Hollywood movies: "I think that for the moment I'm just going to focus on my singing and TV show. I do study other reality TV shows so that I can make my confessionals more engaging and interactive."

Even though Larry isn't thinking of participating in a movie anytime soon, we asked him to use his imagination and tell us who he would share the big screen with in certain scenarios.

Dance-off partner: "Carmen Electra, hands down."

Fight scene: "If I had to engage in a battle I would have Vin Diesel on my side, just to make sure I win and get to use one of his cars in Fast 6."

Crying scene: "I wouldn't use an actress or anyone else. I would share the crying scene with my mother. My mother is everything to me and I show it the most on my reality show. So why cry with anyone else when I have my mother? I tell her everything. She always understands."

Comedy: "I would costar with Eugenio Derbez. I like his show La Familia P. Luche. He's incredibly funny."

Favorite Latino star: "I like Sofia Vergara. She comes across very real and I love the way she speaks English. She's just a very strong and funny woman."

Favorite romantic movie: "Titanic, but I don’t cry."

Watch Larrymania on mun2 this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. C.
