After taking a short break from work to spend time with her first child, Honor, Mexican American actress Jessica Alba returns to the big screen Aug. 19 in her third Robert Rodriguez film. Last year Alba played her first Latina role in Rodriguez’s Machete and it was during filming that he got the idea of writing a part for Alba in Spy Kids 4. But her performance in Machete didn’t go unnoticed. The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), who hosts their annual ALMA Awards® to pay tribute to Latinos in television, film and music, nominated Alba in the Favorite Movie Actress—Drama/Adventure category. She’ll go up against Penélope Cruz, Rosario Dawson, Michelle Rodriguez and Zoe Saldana. Big names are also nominated in the Favorite Movie Actress—Comedy/Musical category, which include Cameron Diaz, Christina Aguilera, Selena Gomez, Eva Mendes and Alexa Vega. Only six male movie actors were nominated overall and all are up for Favorite Movie Actor. Nominees include Antonio Bandera, Demián Bichir, Michael Peña, Bobby Cannavale and Danny Trejo.
The awards show will be hosted by Eva Longoria and George Lopez on Friday, September 16 and will air on NBC. For a full list of nominees visit, www.almawards2011.com
