Cine Latino: If the Cast of 'Expendables 2' Were Latina Women

Cine Latino: If the Cast of 'Expendables 2' Were Latina Women

Aug 17, 2012

Cine Latino covers, well, all things relating to Latino culture and the movies, every Friday.

With Expendables 2 hitting theaters today, we decided to switch things up a bit and put together an assemble of tough-girl Latina actresses who could serve as counterparts to the men in this action-packed ensemble.

Sylvester Stallone/Katy Jurado

With a long career in action films, Sylvester Stallone leads the pack in Expendables 2. Finding his counterpart proved to be a bit challenging, but how about—Katy Jurado? The Mexican actress had a successful career in Mexico and in Hollywood became a fixture in Western films during the 1950s and 1960s. Her most notable roles include High Noon with Gary Cooper, Broken Lance with Spencer Tracy and One-Eyed Jacks with Marlon Brando.  She filmed 71 movies and went on to be the first Latin American actress to win a Golden Globe and be nominated for an Academy Award.

Jason Statham/Salma Hayek

British actor Jason Statham returns to the Expendables franchise as Lee Christmas, whom he describes as "a kind of workingman's hero… you would want to have a beer with." Over the course of his career Statham has jumped off buildings and survived countless explosions, which leads us to Salma Hayek's endless close calls in Desperado, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Bandidas and Savages. The 5'2" star is quick on the draw but it's her seductive methods that prove to be her most advantageous skill.

Jet Li/Zoe Saldana

At 49 years old, Jet Li can still kick ass. He's a world-renowned martial artist with over 30 plus films under his belt. His impressive physicality is definitely hard to match, but after watching Zoe Saldana's lethal moves in Colombiana, she proved to be the Latina star with the most potential, followed by Michelle Rodriguez. The actress has solidified her badassness with roles in Avatar, Star Trek and The Losers.

Dolph Lundgren/Maria Conchita Alonso

Swedish actor Dolph Lundgren began his acting career in 1985 with the James Bond feature A View to Kill that same year he delivered a memorable performance in Rocky IV as Drago. Meanwhile, Cuban actress Maria Conchita Alonso was making her film debut in Moscow on the Hudson and a few years later worked alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in Predator 2 and The Running Man.

Chuck Norris/Maria Felix

At 72 years old, Chuck Norris is the oldest cat in the bunch.  He's considered an international star with 23 films to his name but his accomplishments go beyond the big screen. Norris is the first man from the Western Hemisphere in the more than 4,500 years of Tae Kwon Do to be awarded an eight-degree Black Belt Grand Master ranking. Muy impressive, Chuck, but when it comes to leading figures there's no one like Maria Felix--the "Doña" of Mexican cinema. The iconic leading lady became well known for her larger-than-life, tough leading characters. She dominated the Latino culture with over 47 films, including Dona Barbara, Rio Escondido and La fievre Monte El Pao.

Jean-Claude Van Damme/Kate del Castillo

Jean-Claude Van Damme, also known as the "Muscles from Brussels," got his first break in No Retreat, No Surrender thanks to his impressive marital arts skills. He went on to star in Bloodsport, Double Impact, Universal Soldier and Timecop. So who better to step into his shoes then La Reina del Sur star Kate del Castillo. This bad girl has done it all, she's tried to out run helicopters, jumped off buildings, she can fight with almost anything and her knife and gun skills are in tip-top shape. Best of all she's not scared of getting down and dirty. She recently costarred with Eva Longoria in Without Men.

Bruce Willis/Lynda Carter

Ah, Bruce Willis. Best known for his skilled fighting roles in Pulp Fiction, Nobody's Fool, 12 Monkeys, The Sixth Sense and of course the Die Hard franchise, the 57-year-old actor can certainly still bring a lot to the table. The same can be said about Lynda Carter, who is after all Wonder Woman. In 1975 the half-Mexican actress landed the starring role in The New Adventures of Wonder Woman and wowed audiences with her ability to deflect bullets using her bracelets.

Arnold Schwarzenegger/Michelle Rodriguez

Arnold Schwarzenegger used action hero statusto his advantage to become California's 38th governor. "The Governator" is best known for his Terminator line "I'll be back," a promise he kept by returning to Hollywood after his political career. Michelle Rodriguez is also back, reprising her roles in the Resident Evil, Machete and Fast and the Furious franchises. Her badass attitude and strength led her to battle her way in Girlfight, S.W.A.T., Avatar, Machete and Battle: Los Angeles.

Terry Crews/Rosario Dawson

Former NFL football player Terry Crews looks tough as nails but he's best known for his comedic work in Malibu's Most Wanted, Starsky and Hutch and the TV show Everybody Loves Chris. He can certainly handle a gun and smash people to the floor, but those skills are pretty second nature to Rosario Dawson. The multi-ethnic actress perfected the axe kick in Death Proof and without blinking machine-gunned villains in Sin City.

Randy Couture/Elpidia Carrillo

Randy Couture is best known in the mixed martial arts and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) world. The five-time world champion and Hall of Famer holds the record for becoming the first man in UFC history to win the heavyweight title a total of three times. Despite all the accolades, Couture is relatively unknown in the film world and the same can be said for Elpidia Carrillo. The Mexican actress has only worked on a few Hollywood films, including Predator where she played Anna, a guerrilla member captured by Dutch's troops. She makes the roundup for handily surviving the whole ordeal.

Liam Hemsworth/Stephanie Sigman

Thanks to The Hunger Games, Liam Hemsworth is becoming one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood. Relatively new to the scene, Hemsworth is demonstrating a lot of potential. His Latina counterpart might be newcomer Stephanie Sigman. The young Mexican actress impressed audiences with her powerful performance in Miss Bala, proving she's more than just a pretty face and more than ready to rise up to any occasion.
