Christopher Nolan, the filmmaker who gave us three awesome Batman movies with Christian Bale, has finally started work on his newest project – the highly anticipated sci-fi feature Interstellar. Filming got underway this week in Fort MacLeod, a small town in Alberta, Canada.

Some early set photos featuring stars Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain and John Lithgow  have turned up online (they’re not particularly revealing, but if you’re interested you can check them out over at Comic Book Movie), but more importantly we’ve got more details about the plot of the new film. Insert your own “corny” joke here.

According to the Fort MacLeod Gazette, the film revolves around wormholes, climate change and crops.

Set in the future, the movie details the toll climate change has taken on agriculture, with corn the last crop to be cultivated. The scientists embark on a journey through a wormhole into other dimensions in search of somewhere other crops can be grown."

We know the story has to be about more than that – but those narrative issues are still being kept under wraps. That doesn’t mean we can’t start speculating, though – and our early guesses involve either the wormholes being a tool for McConaughey and company to find a “new Earth” or that it opens a door for something unpleasant to come through to our world.

We’ll have to wait and see how our theories pan out – Interstallar isn’t set to open in theaters until November 7, 2014. That’s a long way off – I wonder if we can open our own wormhole and just skip ahead to next fall…
