Chris Evans Explains Why He's Ready to Retire from Acting

Captain America Winter Soldier

Life is good for actor Chris Evanshe’s Captain America, after all, and Winter Soldier is about to hit theaters, and he’s hard at work on The Avengers: Age of Ultron. So why is he talking about retiring from acting in the not-too-distant future?

Evans expounds on his reasoning in a lengthy Variety interview, but the gist of it is that the actor would really like to spend his time behind the camera, in the director’s chair, as opposed to in front of it. Evans recently made headlines when he talked about taking a break after his Marvel contract expires, but he takes that a step further in the following quote.

“If I’m acting at all, it’s going to be under Marvel contract, or I’m going to be directing. I can’t see myself pursuing acting strictly outside of what I’m contractually obligated to do.”

Marvel fans don’t need to start panicking yet, though – Evans is contractually obligated for three more films as part of his six-movie deal with the studio. After that? It’s all up in the air.

Should Marvel want to keep Evans in the fold (and it should, because he’s great as Captain America), the simple solution here – the one that would presumably make both parties happy – is to let him direct a Captain America movie, or some other Marvel property in exchange for him continuing to don the spandex. That’s a win-win for all involved, basically.

However, it does hint at a looming issue for the Marvel universe. Actors aren’t necessarily going to want to play these roles for forever. Robert Downey Jr. has already hinted at wanting out of the superhero biz, and eventually guys like Evans, Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson are going to want to do something else. Will audiences be okay with recasting these parts? Marvel certainly hopes so.

For his part, Evans does eventually walk back his statement a bit.

“For all I know, in five years, I might say, ‘S**t, I miss acting.’ Right now, I just want to get behind the camera and make movies.”

All Marvel fans can do is hope it works out that way.
