It's been a while since we've seen a Jackie Chan film we truly loved, but nothing can take away the martial arts superstar's legendary kung-fu prowess, ability to craft breathtaking stunts, or his unique, lighthearted blend of action and comedy. Associated Press recently delivered news that the star is looking toward retirement, and a movie called Chinese Zodiac will be his last entry as an actioner. Chan made the announcement at Cannes with co-stars Kwone Sang Woo, Yao Xingtong, and Liao Fan.
Chan admitted that his stunts have taken their toll on his body. He'd like to focus purely on acting from here on out, citing folks like Robert De Niro and Clint Eastwood as role models for the 58-year-old star. " … That's my goal. Because action stars' life is so short. Actor's life is very long. I want to show audiences I can act."
Today came news, however, that contrary to the Cannes report, Chan says he's not retiring from action films — just movies that really risk his safety, according to SlashFilm.
"I just want to let everyone know that I am not retiring from doing action movies," he told fans on his Facebook page. "What I meant to say is that I need to do less of the life risking stunts on my movies. After all these years of doing so many stunts and breaking so many bones, I need to take better care of my body so I can keep working." And it wouldn't be Chan without a injecting a little humor into the situation. "I will continue to do international action movies. And I will keep improving my English," he joked.
Chinese Zodiac finds the actor as a fortune hunter who travels the world searching down missing astrological antiques. Chan called the movie the "most important" film of his career — namely because it took him seven years to write, produce, direct, and coordinate the fight scenes. "For the last ten years I've been choosing the director to direct me. This one I direct myself. I hope this movie, 20 years later, people still remember it. For me, for the audience, for my future, for my history — it's very important."
The trailer doesn't reveal much about plot, but it's nice to see some behind the scenes set pieces of the star kicking butt like usual. Watch it below.
