Watch Two Adorable Chimps Invade a Theater for 'Planet of the Apes'

Jul 16, 2014

It’s hard enough for humans to get through Matt Reeves’ recently released Dawn of the Planet of the Apes without bawling their faces off, but how would two chimps handle the dark, emotional film? An audience at the BigD Auditorium at the Carmike Cinema, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina found out.

Vali and Sugriva live at the Myrtle Beach Safari and are big fans of TV. The two-year-old chimps joined their handlers for a screening of the sci-fi blockbuster, even buying their own tickets and popcorn. This video shows the primates shielding their eyes from the film during the scary parts and gripping the hands of their handlers for comfort. Apparently, they also barked and hooted at the bad guys on the big screen.

Look, this video is cute and all, but it is somewhat uncomfortable to watch wild animals wearing human clothes and knowing they are being fed a diet of television, etc. And the parallels to Reeves’ movie certainly offer food for thought.
