Every time you want to smugly discount all things James Franco, he reels you back in with another project. Take his adaptation of the Cormac McCarthy novel Child of God. A teaser for the dark drama mostly consists of Scott Haze mugging at the camera like a maniac, but that's all we really need to get excited about this one. That, and the promise of James Franco directing scenes filled with rotting corpses and necrophilia.
Welcome to another happy-go-lucky McCarthy adaptation! Haze takes on the role of the author's most twisted protagonist Lester Ballard. The violent outsider shuns society, takes up life in a cave and descends into full-blown madness, haunting the hills of East Tennessee. McCarthy is known for writing challenging material, but Child of God is certainly one of his most disturbing stories and may even be the hardest to translate to film. The teaser is less than a minute long, but it already has that gritty, Southern-gothic vibe we were hoping for. Can Franco pull this one off?
