Your Favorite Thing Today: Channing Tatum Writes 'Magic Mike 2' Next to a Sculpture of Matthew McConaughey

Feb 10, 2014

We have absolutely no idea why Channing Tatum owns a Matthew McConaughey bust, but he's apparently using it as inspiration while he writes Magic Mike 2. Tatum posted the below image to his Facebook wall, writing, "What better way to start writing #MagicMike2 than with my old friend Dallas? #runatribe"

Sure the image is all kinds of adorable (especially the feather hat -- we're loving the feather hat), but what this does sort of tell us is that McConaughey will most likely return for the sequel. If we remove the joke of the whole statue and whatnot, then what we have is Tatum using the bust to help fuel his ideas on where to take the McConaughey character in the sequel.

Many feel Magic Mike signaled the beginning of the Matthew McConaughey renaissance (or McConaissance, as the kids say), and we even think the dude deserved awards consideration for his portrayal of the Ultimate Male Stripper. We assume McConaughey will be back alongside Tatum in the sequel, which was once described as a "road movie" by Magic Mike writer Reid Carolin.

“You know, we are talking a lot about it," Carolin said. "We have a story, and it is really ridiculous and fun. It’s a road movie sort of thing, where a bunch of strippers get back together. It’s more of a broad comedy. I don’t know whether it will happen or not.”

Earlier reports suggested Tatum could actually direct the sequel, especially since Steven Soderbergh has kinda-sorta retired from directing big-screen movies. Soderbergh is a tinkerer, though, and we cannot imagine any sequel happening that doesn't involve him in some capacity, even if he just helps edit or shoot certain scenes.

Regardless, the first one made over $167 million worldwide with a budget of $7 million, meaning a sequel is all but imminent, especially once McConaughey wins that Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club. Coincidentally, his character's name in Magic Mike is Dallas, so I think we've discovered a bit of a theme when it comes to his recent success. Perhaps he should only take on movies and roles that involve the word "Dallas" from now on. Whaddya think?
