It's Confirmed: Channing Tatum Will Finally Play Gambit in an 'X-Men' Movie

May 13, 2014

Even though it may be surprising to learn Channing Tatum hasn't played a superhero yet, that doesn't mean he hasn't been interested. Of course, his interest does boil down to only one specific character, and according to X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner, Tatum is finally getting to play him after all these years.

Yes, the thieving, card-throwing Gambit will appear in another X-Men movie, and when he does Channing Tatum will play him. The actor has been rumored for a turn at Gambit as far back as 2007, when he auditioned to play the character in the third X-Men movie, X-Men: The Last Stand. However, because Fox was developing X-Men Origins: Wolverine at the time, which was to feature Gambit, the studio did not want the same character in both movies. Taylor Kitsch went on to portray Gambit in that film (see an image of him as the character below).

If you're not familiar with Gambit, he's sort of a wild card (literally). Born a Southerner, he's a ladies' man and a master thief, with powers that include card throwing and the ability to charge objects with energy for explosive results. On why Fox has always been attracted to Tatum for the role, Donner told Total Film:

"Well, he's a rogue, Channing. He's a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau. He can handle the action, we all know that. And he has a really good heart, because I know him personally. I did a movie with him. So I think he'll be great for Gambit. He's a Southerner too. He's not from New Orleans, but he is a Southerner and understands that world. And you know Gambit loves New Orleans."

Kind of reminds us of Tony Stark in a way, minus all the money. Should Hugh Jackman eventually step down as Wolverine, there's definitely potential for Tatum's Gambit to rise up and become one of the leaders of the big-screen X-Men universe. Tatum recently told MTV why he loves Gambit to the point that he'd continue to chase the role for several years:

"Gambit’s my really only X-Men that I’ve ever loved. I [mean] I’ve loved them all, they’re all great, [but] I don’t know I guess just being from down south—my dad’s from Louisiana and I’m from Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida—I don’t know I just related to him. He’s just kind of a suave; he’s the most un-X-Men X-Man who’s ever been in X-Men, other than maybe Wolverine. He’s kind of like the anti-hero; he’s a thief. He’s not even like a hero, he’s kind of walking the line of grey. He loves women and drinking and smoking, he’s just a cool guy that happens to have a good moral center.”

Currently there's no word on where the character will fit within the current slate of X-Men movies. We have X-Men: Days of Future Past arriving on May 23, then X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016 and another solo Wolverine movie in 2017. Director Bryan Singer previous teased Gambit's inclusion in Apocalypse, perhaps setting up a future solo movie in 2018.

What would you like to see happen, and do you think Tatum is the right choice to play Gambit?
