Gerard ButlerHere’s Hollywood’s latest casting news to make your hump day a little more tolerable.

Gerard Butler is reportedly in talks to star in Manhunt – a new thriller from Breck Eisner that sounds suspiciously like a remake of First Blood.

The story, written by the scribes behind Iron Man, finds the FBI tracking a domestic terrorist with serious survival skills through the North Carolina wilderness. They enlist the help of a local bear hunter to track the criminal, but the manhunt quickly turns into a fight for survival as the terrorist turns the tables on the Feds.

No word yet on which role Butler is up for, but we suspect it’s the good guy bear hunter. [via EmpireOnline]

Young Adult director Jason Reitman is set to make Labor Day his next feature film – but it’s not another holiday-themed romantic comedy or slasher flick.

Instead, the film is a coming of age story based on a Joyce Maynard novel that focuses on the unique relationship that forms between a depressed mother (Kate Winslet), an escaped convict (James Brolin), and her son -- over the course of Labor Day weekend.

Brolin and Winslet have been attached for some time now, but Reitman has finally found an actor for the pivotal role of the kid – who’s the focal point of the novel. 13-year-old Gattlin Griffith has won the part – another in a lengthy line of roles for someone so young. Hopefully he’s up to the task here.

Meanwhile, Dawson’s Creek alum James Van Der Beek has also joined the production. Van Der Beek will play a police officer investigating a missing person’s case in the film. Principal photography on Labor Day is set to commence this summer with a 2013 release date planned. [via /Film]

Finally, Ralph Macchio is mounting a career comeback. The former Karate Kid has snagged the role of Psycho screenwriter Joe Stefano in the star-studded Hitchcock. The actor, who’s spent the past few years appearing in supporting roles and on television, will join Anthony Hopkins, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, and Kurtwood Smith (amongst others) on the project.

The film is set to chronicle the making of Hitchcock’s classic fright flick Psycho while also shining a light on the filmmaker’s relationship with his wife. Macchio’s part will probably be a minor one, but it’s good to see that Daniel-san is still getting work. [via The Film Stage]
