If you thought Hollywood had already optioned every comic book and superhero character in existence, think again. Captain Planet, the eco-friendly, spandex-wearing hero of the ‘90s cartoon series Captain Planet and the Planeteers is now slated to get his very own live action feature film. The power of heart, indeed.
Cartoon Network announced that they’ve signed a deal with Angry Filmworks to bring the environmental avenger to the big screen. Run by Don Murphy and Susan Montford, Angry Filmworks has a pretty impressive resume – they’ve been involved with all three Transformers films. The folks behind this project are hoping the duo can work the same kind of magic for the mullet-sporting title character.
Truthfully, this looks to be a tough sell. While environmental causes are something everyone can get behind, Captain Planet was a pretty dorky superhero. In fact, he hardly ever did anything – instead relying on his ring-wearing proxies (each one armed with the power of wind, fire, water, earth or heart. Yes, heart…) to figure out solutions to the dastardly plans of people killing mother Gaia. It would seem, if this has any chance of working as a live-action feature, that the character will have to be revamped at least a little.
Montford and Murphy see this as the perfect time to bring Captain Planet back to the public. “With the earthquakes, tornadoes, melting icebergs and all the other problems threatening the world right now, Earth really needs her greatest defender,” said Montford. Captain Planet is Earth’s greatest defender? When did this happen? Did Superman die again?
Kidding aside, the original series was a good tool for raising environmental awareness amongst the younger generation. Co-created by Ted Turner and the animation studio DIC, Captain Planet and the Planeteers ran for six seasons and earned several daytime Emmy nominations. How it will fare on the silver screen, or who will don the tights, remains to be seen. We’ll keep you posted as developments come to light.
