'Captain Marvel' Will Be Directed By Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck

Apr 19, 2017

Just two days ago Marvel Studios let a handful of press into their offices to get glimpses of new movies like Black Panther, Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel. The latter movie, about the immensely powerful alien-human hybrid Carol Danvers, only had concept art to show, though, since the movie still didn't have a director attached to it. But what a difference 48 hours can make. Not only does Captain Marvel now have a director, but it has two of them!

Variety reports that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have landed the highly coveted job of directing Marvel's first female superhero movie.

It's understandable if those two names have you scratching your head a bit. Boden and Fleck are certainly not known for directing big budget Hollywood movies. Their biggest features to date are the indie gambling drama Mississippi Grind and the teen drama It's Kind of a Funny Story. They are not your typical Hollywood directors. That's also probably precisely why Marvel's Kevin Feige is interested in them.

Remember that before the Russo brothers directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, their biggest feature film was the Owen Wilson comedy You, Me and Dupree. But Feige saw the potential in them and now the Russos are a huge, integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and are currently directing Avengers: Infinity War. So, it's a safe bet that Feige sees something similar in Boden and Fleck.

Unfortunately the rest of us will have a long, long wait before we get to share in that vision. Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson, won't hit heaters until March 8, 2019.
