With its 2014 release date still far in the future, there’s no need for Marvel to rush with casting the major roles in the highly anticipated sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but the studio seems set on locking in performers now rather than later. Anthony Mackie joined the cast last month, and today the New York Post reports the studio is considering a list of recognizable actresses for the female lead.
According to the Post’s sources, the current list of front runners includes Twilight’s Anna Kendrick and Like Crazy’s Felicity Jones. Apparently, 28 Weeks Later actress Imogen Poots is also still in the mix.
Given that filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo have promised a “darker, edgier” sequel, we’re not quite sure which actress would be best. Poots’ experience in 28 Weeks Later and her recent work with Terrence Malick makes her an intriguing choice, though.
Whoever eventually lands the coveted part will be working alongside Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan (who are reprising their roles as Captain America and Bucky for the sequel) as well as the aforementioned Anthony Mackie. Marvel’s hoping the sequel will build on momentum gained from this summer’s The Avengers and top the first film’s $368 million worldwide haul.
