One of the biggest historical moments in recent years was the killing of Osama bin Laden – and since the public is endlessly fascinated not only with covert operations but the details surrounding final moments of the “Most Wanted Man in the World," it’s not particularly surprising that several films chronicling the event are in the works.
The biggest comes from The Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow – but her Zero Dark Thirty won’t be the only title this fall recounting the events of May 2, 2011. Viewers will also be able to watch Seal Team 6: The Raid on Osama bin Laden (aka Code Name: Geronimo) when it debuts this November. We’ve got a new official trailer for that film for you to peruse.
While Seal Team 6 doesn’t have the same level of budget or star power as Bigelow’s film, this project isn’t just an attempt at a quick cash-in, either. Cam Gigandet, William Fichtner and Xzibit star in this version, which is set to debut on the National Geographic Channel on November 4. NatGeo reportedly worked closely with the Weinstein Company to make that happen and ensure that the finished film hewed to what the network’s audience expects.
We think Bigelow’s film has a better chance of being the definitive retelling of the raid on bin Laden’s compound, but Seal Team 6 doesn’t look too shabby, either. Getting it out a month ahead of the bigger film is a smart move – this way Seal Team 6 can serve as a tasty appetizer before main course of Zero Dark Thirty.
