Bryan Singer Reveals 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Concept Art and Set Photos as Production Begins

Apr 29, 2015

X-Men: Apocalypse started shooting this week, and that may seem surprising given that we've been hearing about this next installment in the Marvel-based mutant franchise for a while now. Oscar Isaac was announced for the role of the titular villain way back in November, and further casting of characters and hype about how much bigger and better the X-Men: Days of Future Past follow-up will be have been trickling in ever since.

But it was only two days ago that director Bryan Singer shared a photo from the set on day one of production. The Instagram below reminds us that Apocalypse will be set in 1983 -- and aren't you jealous of whatever characters are getting to see the original version of Return of the Jedi on the big screen? I hope Singer has one of the X-Men humming "Ewok Celebration" (aka "Yub Nub") as they exit the cinema.

Singer also posted another photo showing an arcade set he had built at the Montreal mall where they're filming. Meanwhile, candid, unofficial photos have popped up online showing that newly recast young mutants Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Jubilee (Lana Condor) and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) are the characters involved in the arcade scene. We recently got our first look at Smit-McPhee in the blue-skinned part courtesy of Singer, too.

And also regarding this freshman group of actors, rumors have been circulating that Apocalypse and the next Wolverine solo feature mark the end of Singer's version of the X-Men Cinematic Universe. Would that just mean that all the original cast will have been or will be replaced? Or would the whole canon be rebooted, with Jennifer Lawrence, who has said this is her final X-Men movie, and Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy all out? Are Turner, Sheridan and the rest of the new recruits one and done?

As for more concrete updates on the movie, Singer sent Empire a few pieces of concept art we haven't seen before, plus a better look at the Archangel art he'd teased on Instagram previously. That's up first, showing the character (played on screen by Ben Hardy) with his metal wings spread out and then without any sign of the appendages.

Next we've got a cutaway image of the Blackbird and its engine while Professor X and two others (Moira and Beast?) examine the jet.

Here is a new version of Professor X's Cerebro helmet:

Finally, here's something from much earlier than 1983, an Ancient Egyptian setting:
