All those stories about how South Park creators Matt Parker and Trey Stone are bringing their Tony Award-winning Broadway musical The Book of Mormon to the big screen? Turns out those aren’t quite true.
The creative duo recently spoke to THR in order to set the record straight about stories circulating that they were ready to make the jump from stage to screen, and the news is bound to disappoint anyone who was dying to see the tale at their local multiplex. Parker says there are no immediate plans to turn the property into a film, stating “We did a stage show and it worked out way better than we ever thought, and we’d like it to be that for a while, you know, without contaminating it with a movie.”
The duo didn’t rule out the possibility of a The Book of Mormon film at some point – but insist that if it happens, it won’t be in the near future. As to how all of this got started, Parker says it was a misunderstanding in a recent interview the pair conducted. Asked if they’d ever do a film version of the stage show, they responded “We said, ‘Yeah, I think we could do a Book of Mormon movie,’ and they were like, ‘Book of Mormon Movie! It’s coming!'”
The sole consolation for disappointed fans is that the 15th season of South Park continues on Comedy Central starting on October 5th.
