I try not to pay attention to those lists that magazines like Forbes
put out each year. Ya know, those lists full of wealthy, influential people who have so much money and power that their butlers probably make three times your current salary. It's all political, anyway, and I'm sure there are many conversations followed by secret handshakes and hush-hush deals prior to these lists being published.
Take, for example, Time
magazine's big, splashy "100 Most Influential People in the World" list. Now, you'd think that if Time
was going to put out a list of the most influential people in the world, we'd be seeing some pretty big, influential names, right? Yeah ... not when there's Hollywood money and power to be thrown around.
Why else would someone like Blake Lively
show up on this list? Yes, Blake Lively. Last I checked, Gossip Girl
wasn't exactly making great strides toward solving world peace. Sure, Lively is set to star in some pretty big upcoming films (like this summer's Green Lantern
), but surely she hasn't done enough in the past year to qualify her among the top 100 (!) most influential people in the world. I mean, do you even know who Blake Lively is ... other than "that kinda hot chick from Gossip Girl
But wait! She's starring in Green Lantern
. That's a movie being distributed by Warner Bros, which is a studio that falls under the umbrella of Time Warner. And what else falls under the Time Warner umbrella? Oh, how about Time
magazine! If you needed any more of a reason why Blake Lively's spot on this list is complete bulls*it, look no further than the paragraph written about her by Baz Luhrmann (where's the connection?) which was included in the Time
"Every now and then, an actor or actress manages to somehow channel the vitality of youth — that indefinable, natural, unprocessed glamour full of possibility and filled with anticipation for an endless future," wrote Luhrmann. "I've known Blake the actress, and I've known Blake the person, who would surprise many with her down-to-earth coolness. She makes you feel that she, and life, are going to go on forever."
So she's one of the 100 most influential people in the world because of her ... coolness? And because she makes you feel like life can go on forever? Here's a tidbit: If Time
thinks this girl is one of the 100 most influential people in the world right now, then I don't know if I want life to go on forever. Maybe it's better if the aliens attack sooner rather than later -- perhaps then Blake Lively can use all of her influence to save us.
