Big Rumor Buzz: Who Might Replace Wolverine in the 'X-Men' Universe?

X-23

We know that Hugh Jackman is preparing to reprise his role as Logan, aka Wolverine, for the final time in the upcoming third stand-alone installment that will revolve around the character. But will that mean the end of Wolverine in the X-Men cinematic universe?

A new rumor suggests otherwise. X-23 (above), a character that first appeared in a Marvel comic book in 2004, will appear in the third Wolverine movie, according to SuperHeroHype. X-23 is a clone of Wolverine, with similar "strength, reflexes, agility and a healing factor," and was later named Laura Kinney In the comics, X-23 "recently took on the mantle of Wolverine following the hero’s death."

Naturally, that's led to speculation that X-23 could step in for Wolverine in future installments of the X-Men movie series, including the related movies New Mutants and X-Force. If so, that would be a cool twist. Still not officially titled, the third Wolverine movie will open in theaters on March 3, 2017.

Maisie Williams

Speaking of New Mutants, early this month Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) was rumored to have been cast as Wolfsbane, also known as Rahne Sinclair, a shape-shifting Scottish werewolf. It was also claimed that Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) had been cast as Magik and Alexandra Storm would be reprising her X-Men: Apocalypse role as Storm. Fox denied the report.

Now, however, Williams has told Entertainment Weekly: "I can’t say much about it at all, but I would absolutely love to be a part of it, [and] to be a part of the Marvel family,” Williams said. “New Mutants looks absolutely incredible and I’ve always loved the idea of spin-offs and [director] Joshua Boone is incredibly talented. So, yeah, sign me up.”

X-Men: Apocalypse will open in theaters on May 27. We're hoping to hear more about New Mutants soon after that.

Jeff Goldblum

In advance of the release of Independence Day: Resurgence, Jeff Goldblum has also been making the interview rounds. Given his rich background as an actor, and willingness over the years to appear in everything from tiny independent features to big-budget studio productions, there's certainly no lack of projects for him to talk about.

True, Goldblum did not reprise his role from Jurassic Park in last year's Jurassic World, and is not slated to do so for the next installment in the giant dinosaur franchise. Yet in a recent interview with MTV (via SlashFilm), he hinted that he is not opposed to the idea of appearing in a superhero movie. Asked specifically if he'd met with either Marvel or DC for such a role, he stated: "I can say very little right now. But you might be onto something. … I'm open to all."

Granted, it's not much to go on, but it would definitely be great to see Goldblum appear in a superhero movie and he's sufficiently talented to fit into any role that's offered to him. The interview is great fun; you can watch it below and then look for Goldblum in Independence Day: Resurgence when it opens in theaters on June 24.
