See How Robert Rodriguez' 'From Dusk Till Dawn' TV Series Will Connect to 'Pulp Fiction'

Dec 06, 2013

Pulp Fiction Jules BurgerAustin already has tons of cool stuff that would make even the most jaded movie lover smile (e.g. the Alamo Drafthouse), but it’s just gotten a little cooler with the appearance of a brand new (fictional) fast-food joint.

If you’re wondering how a fast-food franchise ties into movies, it’s not just another Mickey D’s or Popeye’s Chicken sprouting up to blight the landscape. No, Austin’s newest fast-food mecca is none other than a Big Kahuna Burger.

If you’ve never had a Big Kahuna, word on the street is that the folks there make some tasty burgers. Unfortunately, you won’t be trying their delicious take on Hawaiian fast food anytime soon…

Turns out the restaurant isn’t some inspired Austinite’s attempt to pay homage to one of Quentin Tarantino’s most beloved creations (the food gets the official Jules seal of approval in one of Pulp Fiction’s most memorable scenes), but is instead a set that will be used in Robert Rodriguez’ upcoming From Dusk Till Dawn television series.

Fast-food BBQ place the Station Grill is serving as the stand-in for Big Kahuna Burger, so if you’re in Austin and want to snap a photo, I’d get on over there sooner rather than later. You might not get another opportunity to pose in front of the greatest burger joint that never was.

The inclusion of the fast-food chain in Rodriguez’ series (starring DJ Cotrona, Robert Patrick and Wilmer Valderama) adds more fuel to the fire that all of Tarantino’s films exist in one universe. Of course, this isn’t the first time Big Kahuna has tied into Tarantino and Rodriguez’ vampire tale. In the original film, Seth (George Clooney) and Richie (Tarantino) can be spotted chowing down on what looks to be Kahuna Burgers before all the vampire insanity kicks into high gear.

The From Dusk Till Dawn television series is set to debut in 2014 on Rodriguez’ new El Rey network. The network itself will launch later this month.
