Big 'Star Wars' News: Original Trilogy in the Works from Rian Johnson, Plus a Live-Action TV Series

Nov 09, 2017

Lucasfilm has just made a couple big announcements about the future of the Star Wars franchise. First thing is they're developing a new movie trilogy with The Last Jedi writer-director Rian Johnson. Second thing is they're moving forward with a live-action TV series, as fans have been hoping for. Here's what we know:

When will the new movie trilogy take place?

We've seen the original trilogy, and then we got the prequels, and we're currently in the continuation of the saga. And meanwhile, Disney is producing spin-off Star Wars Story movies with links to the main series. But surprisingly this new trilogy will be its very own thing. According to, "In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored."

Will Johnson be directing the entire trilogy?

At the moment, it's not clear if Johnson could helm all three episodes of this new trilogy. But he will be developing the trilogy with his longtime producer Ram Bergman and will at least write and direct the first installment. Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy says of Johnson's future, "He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy."

What is the timeline for these movies?

No release dates or any other timing for the trilogy has been revealed at this point. We can probably presume these movies will follow the every other year strategy of the current Saga episodes following Star Wars Episode IX (out December 2019), perhaps alternating with further Star Wars Story features. We do know that Kennedy recently confirmed we'd be getting another 10 years of Star Wars movies. According to, nothing has been set yet, "and no porgs were available for comment."

Wait, so are porgs involved?

Again, there was no comment. But again, the new trilogy will be dealing with new characters in a new part of the galaxy never explored before. So... maybe.

What is known about the live-action TV series?

Not much other than there will be one and it's going to be a part of Disney's new streaming service launching in late 2019. Maybe that is when this show will debut, as well. The announcement came in the form of shareholder call from chairman-CEO Bob Iger today, according to Variety. He also revealed there would be new series from Marvel and based on the Monsters, Inc. and High School Musical properties. Hopefully we'll know more about all of this soon.
