Welcome to the first installment of Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we cherry-pick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past few days.
1. The Giver
This new 60-second piece for The Giver doesn’t completely fix the issues in the first trailer, but it does manage to suggest the book-to-film adaptation still has a chance. The use of black-and-white footage isn’t particularly well woven into the material, but it is there and it’s effective thanks to sharper editing and an effective representation of the strikingly powerful and unnerving tone.
2. Let’s Be Cops
Even though the latest trailer for Let’s Be Cops reuses quite a bit of footage from the first promo, it still works because the pace is spot on, there’s a clear presentation of the clever story, the jokes are funny and then there’s just enough new ones to suggest the gag can keep on going.
It isn’t easy making a haunted-house movie stand out amongst the lot, but this new trailer for Jessabelle comes with such a striking Southern setting, so many unique story components and unexpected twists and turns that, at this point, it absolutely looks as though it could show us something we’ve never seen before.
4. As Above, So Below
If As Above, So Below isn’t on your radar, this trailer will put it there. Not only is this piece incredibly eerie and brimming with unforgettable imagery, but it also strikes the perfect balance between delivering captivating exposition and maintaining a degree of mystery. The only unfortunate thing is that the movie doesn’t come out until August 15.
5. REC 4: Apocalypse
It was hard to imagine the REC franchise ever making a comeback after REC 3: Genesis, but based on this new trailer for REC 4: Apocalypse, it seems as though there’s a chance Paco Plaza could pull it off. Even though the found-footage perspective is long gone, the visuals and tone do feel akin to the first two films and unite to build an intensity and terror that the third film lacked.
