The Best Movie Trailers of the Week

The Best Movie Trailers of the Week

Jan 23, 2015

Welcome back to Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we handpick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past week.

It Follows

The It Follows marketing campaign continues to kill it with another international trailer that highlights the film’s ingenious concept and also does a solid job of teasing the especially haunting and unique tone. Similar to the full feature, this promo nails the balance between the minimalist approach and bolder scare tactics, giving the trailer a hypnotic quality that pulls you in and then puts you on edge.

The Hunting Ground

Kirby Dick’s The Hunting Ground just got a fantastic trailer to celebrate its Sundance Film Festival premiere today. The piece is brilliantly structured, opening with intimate testimonials from select individuals and then broadening the scope to offer up a comprehensive sense of the mind-blowing widespread issue. It also does an exceptional job of making the women involved feel like real people you can connect to rather than mere interview subjects. The promo’s got an especially grounded and human quality to it, allowing the material to make a poignant, lasting impression.

Everly

Joe Lynch’s Everly looks downright ridiculous, but this trailer sells it well because it totally embraces the absurdity of it. Some of the effects don’t look great and a good deal of the dialogue is pretty abysmal, but who cares? It’s Salma Hayek kicking ass grindhouse style in a trailer that rocks the tagline, “You can’t keep a good woman down.” I’m in!

All the Wilderness

Full disclosure, I’ve got a quote in this trailer so I might be just a little bit biased, but regardless, it’s still an impeccable promo that functions as a highly engaging character piece, much like the film itself. All the Wilderness doesn’t have a traditionally structured narrative, which could make it a tough sell, but this trailer gives you so much access to Kodi Smit-McPhee’s character and has so much energy to it that it’s hard not to get caught up in what’s going on in his life and want to see more of it.
