The Best Movie Trailers of the Week

The Best Movie Trailers of the Week

Jan 09, 2015

Welcome back to Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we handpick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past week.

The Lazarus Effect

The Lazarus Effect wasn’t even on my radar until that first image of Olivia Wilde dropped, but now between that and this trailer, it’s easily one of my most anticipated horror movies of the year. You think you’ve seen people come back from the dead on the big screen before? Not like this. Based on this trailer, The Lazarus Effect feels like it could be a strong, character-driven horror film that puts a fresh, thoughtful spin on a possession/reanimation nightmare.

The Peanuts Movie

About half of the latest trailer for The Peanuts Movie is exactly the same as that first one, but it doesn’t matter. Director Steve Martino and his team absolutely nail the animation, giving Snoopy and the Peanuts gang a modern 3D look without sacrificing any of the original texture of the beloved characters. Between the added momentum from Flo Rida and Fitz’s “What I Like About You” and the piece’s feel-good vibe, this Peanuts trailer is an absolute pleasure to watch -- whether you’ve seen half of the material before or not.

When a film’s release date keeps getting pushed, you’re bound to be a little concerned, but based on this new trailer, Will Canon’s Demonic actually looks pretty good. The piece does have a handful of very familiar genre cliches, but the idea of getting to experience the massacre and the postmassacre investigation, possibly simultaneously, is very appealing.

Good Kill

The trailer for Good Kill doesn’t have the intensity of that downright incredible American Sniper promo, but it does present the act of sitting in a tiny room and fighting a war by remote control thousands of miles away from your target in a pretty riveting manner. Some of the dialogue is a bit heavy-handed, but Ethan Hawke’s commanding on-screen presence and the fascinating drone-pilot lifestyle sell Good Kill as a tense, intimate thriller.

The Voices

The first trailer for The Voices could have hit certain beats a bit harder, but I’ve been looking forward to this one since its debut at Sundance 2014, so I might be nitpicking a little too much. Regardless, this promo still wins big courtesy of the wildly appealing star-studded cast, the hilariously eccentric core scenario and the fact that the film just looks like a total blast.

No, not the Ant-Man teaser trailer. This section belongs to that amusing little sneak peek at the teaser trailer. The teaser trailer itself isn’t a total disaster, but it is tonally unsound, a structural mess and a big disappointment. This official “Ant-Sized Sneak Peek,” however, is insanely clever.
