The Best Movie Trailers of the Week

Welcome back to Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we handpick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past week.

Penguins of Madagascar Trailer

Penguins of Madagascar

There’s a reason the penguins of Madagascar are getting their own movie; they deserve it. They’ve proved their worth in the Madagascar film franchise, their own award-winning TV show and now do the same in the trailer for their spin-off movie, too. Everything they do is funny, even the things you might not expect to be. Rather than cram as much comedy as possible into two minutes and 15 seconds, after a brief introduction, the piece puts the focus on just three gags and that gives us the time to really appreciate and remember all of them.

Birdman

We’ve never had much information on Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman beyond it being a dark comedy about a guy who was once a big-screen superhero, but now that the film’s first teaser is here, it’s safe to say that no amount of detail would have tipped us of to the style and tone he was striving for. The combination of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” and the aesthetic of that opening long shot bear a mesmerizing quality. It’s a highly successful tease, drawing you in with bold, provocative imagery, making a very strong first impression and then leaving you eager for more.

Home

There’s definitely a chance that Oh and the Boovs might be too grating to make it through a full feature without ticking you off, but this trailer also suggests his antics are charming enough to make it worth giving Home a shot. There’s a number of jokes that work quite well all on their own, like the “I has” speak and the purring cat, but the fact that the characters around Oh seem just as aware of his irritating qualities as the audience adds a fun, fresh layer to the humor that could take the comedy further than one might expect.

The Boxtrolls

The Boxtrolls doesn’t hit theaters until September 26, but the film’s promotional campaign has already well established that these characters will be an absolute pleasure to spend time with. This latest trailer is pristinely structured with about a minute of highly successful world building that seamlessly flows right into the preview's biggest takeaway: life is better with Boxtrolls in it.

The Equalizer

The first trailer for The Equalizer failed to prove that Denzel Washington’s Robert McCall is a standout amongst all the other antiheroes with a vengeance out there, but this new edition functions as a far more powerful character piece. Rather than jump right into Chloe Moretz’s character’s situation, this trailer takes the time to first show you what McCall is all about so that you’re rooting for him before even touching his main mission, making all the story elements that follow monumentally more effective.
