Welcome back to Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we handpick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past week.
This new international trailer for Luc Besson’s Lucy doesn’t deviate much from the film’s first official promo, but it does offer a little more insight into exactly what Scarlett Johansson is capable of and, in turn, continues to prove that she should have no trouble holding her own amongst the Transformers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ninja Turtles and any other out-of-this-world heroes trying to dominate the summer season.
Edge of Tomorrow
There’s definitely concern that the Edge of Tomorrow marketing campaign is divulging too many plot details prior to the film’s June 6 release, but at least they’re all being used in a highly effective manner, which actually mimics Tom Cruise’s character’s growth in the narrative. With each trailer, we experience more of the story and, therefore, more of Lt. Col. Bill Cage’s time in combat. Just as he learns with each cycle through this time loop, so do we with each new promo. It’s a remarkably quick and immersive form of story and character development, but it still begs the question: are we better off jumping into the full feature with such a comprehensive idea of what he’s going through? However, from a promotional standpoint, the abundance of information does make you more invested and creates an obligation to see the film and see his story through.
Initially, having 40 seconds of a trailer for a new movie recycling imagery from previous installments feels like a copout, but for anyone who’s stuck with the V/H/S series over the years, when the “they go viral” title card hits, it hits hard. The material that follows is essentially nothing more than a montage because we know absolutely nothing about the narratives in the third edition, but some of the imagery is so unsettling, it’ll still leave a mark.
When Tilda Swinton speaks, she completely commands your attention, so there’s no better person to convey the rules of the train in Snowpiercer, the importance of those rules and the consequences if you break them than her. Every single word of her speech is fueled by a disturbingly fervent devotion to order. Between her delivery and the accompanying visuals, you get a multidimensional sense of the situation and can truly feel the pressure of the environment and those that are in charge of it.
Transformers: Age of Extinction
Even though interest in and patience for the Transformers series was lowered a tad thanks to Revenge of the Fallen and Dark of the Moon, this trailer sparks a desire to see more for one reason and one reason alone – Dinobots. The large majority of this promo feels like more of the same with the addition of Mark Wahlberg, but even if the material turns your brain into metal-on-metal combat mush, Optimus Prime’s call for a new army paired with the Grimlock reveal packs so much nostalgia and momentum, it’ll absolutely leave you eager for more.
