The Best Movie Trailers of the Week

The Best Movie Trailers of the Week

May 09, 2014

Welcome back to Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we handpick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past week.

22 Jump Street

The details of their new mission aren’t groundbreaking in the least, but top priority for a 22 Jump Street promo is to give you the impression this movie is going to be a good time, and this new international trailer does just that. Half the fun of the first film is the outrageous yet charming connection between Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, and it seems as though the editors behind this trailer are well aware of it. Even though raunchy jokes and big action set pieces are front and center, it’s the chemistry between the two that drives almost every single one of them.

Under the Electric Sky

The new trailer for the documentary Under the Electric Sky makes us want to check out the Electric Daisy Carnival firsthand much more so than experience it through the documentary, but considering the odds of our flying to Las Vegas for the event are slim to none, we're okay getting our fix through the film.

Tammy

There’s certainly something familiar about Tammy, but the character works because the bits are original enough and Melissa McCarthy sells them all so well. You’d think that at this point we would have had enough of the Topper Jack’s robbery, but thanks to the additional material and highly effective intercutting, the sequence still feels fresh and rocks an impeccable pace. By that point there’s so much momentum and you’ve already got such a big grin on your face that the new footage is in optimal position for big reactions, especially the gag with the bee – or rather, “the bee.”

Coherence

The new trailer for Coherence is an achievement in two respects. First off, whereas most critic quotes and accolades typically come midway through a promo attempting to validate what you’ve seen thus far, this piece puts a quote right at the top, and a particularly effective one at that, calling for your full attention right from the start. Second, it’s frustratingly fascinating. There’s little to no concrete information in this entire piece, yet you’re still left desperate to know what’s happening to the film’s leads.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

It’s so easy to fall back on that all too familiar trailer-ending action-packed montage - especially when you’re a summer release loaded with combat - but the editors behind the first full trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes have no need for it because they successfully build an incredibly comprehensive representation of the story, one with a far more natural and more powerful build.
