There’s nothing in the new trailer for The Expendables 3 to suggest the film improves upon the first two, but why should it? The original snatched up $274 million worldwide and the second claimed $305 million. It makes total sense that the folks behind the third installment’s marketing campaign would stick with what works and dish out a trailer that promises to deliver more of what you love. However, while that may work from a financial perspective, it’s not getting The Expendables 3 into this week’s Best Stuff.
The Best Stuff
Killer concept, stellar performance, and one heck of a build -- the first trailer for Luc Besson’s Lucy really has it all! You’d think a montage of Scarlett Johansson kicking some serious you know what would feel a bit too familiar with Captain America: The Winter Solider arriving in theaters, but in just a single minute Johansson solidifies Lucy as a standout, and that’s well before the piece spills the deets on what makes her so special.
2. Palo Alto
Admittedly, 10 seconds into the new trailer for Palo Alto, I was ready to dump it in the Worst Stuff and label it a tired teen cliché, but soon thereafter the beat picks up and the story elements come together in a way that turns the world into a far more engaging environment, giving you enough access to the characters so that you care to know more about them.
3. Shaun the Sheep
If you frequent this column, you know I’ve got a thing for cute petlike creatures and animals, so it should come as no surprise that I’m totally smitten by the first teaser for Shaun the Sheep. Just like Wallace & Gromit and Chicken Run, the animation is instantly appealing -- plus the whole scenario of Shaun and co. attempting to make their own movie is pleasantly comical and charming.
The Worst Stuff
1. Lucky Them
It’s a good thing I’d watch Toni Collette in just about anything because the new trailer for her latest film, Lucky Them, is loaded with familiar plot points and an overabundance of information, none of which is all that interesting or compelling.
2. Wolf Creek 2
As someone who’s never seen Wolf Creek, this trailer for Wolf Creek 2 gives me absolutely no desire to play catch-up before the sequel hits. Perhaps the name alone will be enough of a draw for fans of the first, but based on this promo Wolf Creek 2 is just one big joke. We need more to a narrative than your typical creepy redneck (or bushman) threatening a group of unsuspecting one-dimensional leads or else the viewership will be limited to just the existing fan base.
3. Sex Tape
Similar to Lucky Them, it’s a good thing Sex Tape rocks the appeal of two very likable leads because beyond the fact that the movie stars Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz, there’s absolutely nothing in this new red-band trailer to suggest it could be a deserving mid-summer hit. The scenario does have potential, but this promo doesn’t push the boundaries in any respect. The story is disappointingly predictable and repetitive, and for a dirty, R-rated trailer, the jokes are unsatisfyingly tame.
