The Best - and Worst - Movie Trailers of the Week

Sep 06, 2013

It’s frat boy Zac Efron vs. Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne’s quaint suburban couple. The trailer for Neighbors should have been hilarious, but instead, all we got was a mildly appealing scenario with familiar and forgettable jokes. Perhaps they’re just saving the good stuff for the full feature, but that still means the film misses out Best Stuff honors this week.

The Best Stuff

1. Gravity: Say hello to yet another outstanding piece of promotional material for Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity. The sound design and editing here are just impeccable. Not only is the scenario inherently unnerving, but every single audio and visual decision enhances that sensation tenfold. And to top it all off, this trailer actually manages to expand upon previous promos in a way that leaves you even more eager to catch the full film, as you’re desperate to know how all of these new story elements actually come together.

2. Best Man Down: Really, this isn’t a well-constructed trailer. The story and, more importantly, the motivating factors behind that story aren’t particularly believable, and the name Lumpy is just flat-out irritating, but somehow, you can still feel the charm and heart radiating from these characters, and that proves to be more than enough of a draw.

3. RoboCop: This one could use some work as well, but at least this trailer for the new RoboCop movie does hit the necessary draws. The introductory material could use some restructuring, but once Joel Kinnaman is torched and transformed, the thrill of the character and firepower leaves you with the impression that the film will likely be loaded with questionable dramatics but highly entertaining action.

The Worst Stuff

1. Kill Your Darlings: Even as someone who knows a moderate amount about Alan Ginsberg, for me this trailer still doesn’t put the pieces together well enough to raise curiosity concerning the narrative nor even draw an emotional connection to any of the characters. Fortunately this new Kill Your Darlings trailer does offer an effective montage of the all-star cast, and for many that alone might be enough.

2. Runner Runner: No! The Runner Runner marketing team just totally nixed the most human and relatable part of the story. Who cares about some random guy getting screwed over by a gambling tycoon? It’s the story about a college kid so desperate to pay his tuition that he resorts to online gambling, loses everything and then winds up working for and being conned by that gambling tycoon that’s intriguing.

3. Under the Skin: I’m all for the weird and cryptic every now and then, but what is this? Is this random montage of deformities, blue people, babies and a rather unhappy looking Scarlett Johansson supposed to make me want to see Under the Skin? No thanks.

What are your favorite and least favorite movie trailers this week?
