The Best -- and Worst -- Movie Promos of the Week

The Best -- and Worst -- Movie Promos of the Week

Nov 30, 2012

“True courage is about knowing not when to take a life, but when to spare one.” You can write that one down as one of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey's most memorable quotes, but the first clip from the highly anticipated December 14 release -- as well as the latest behind-the-scenes postproduction video -- were both trumped by four other pieces of Hobbit promotional material this week.

The Best Stuff

1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey IMAX Midnight Posters: Even as someone who isn’t a diehard Hobbit/Lord of the Rings fan, I still want one of these to hang on my wall -- the Gollum one to be exact. But the best part about this quartet of posters is that they’re for some of the franchise’s most loyal followers, the ones with midnight IMAX tickets.

2. A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III Posters: Do you like pickles? I like pickles, so naturally a random poster of a pickle and only a pickle is going to catch my eye. But in all seriousness, this poster campaign for A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III is offbeat to the max, but in a striking way, making you wonder and raising intrigue.

3. Django Unchained Final Trailer: Check out number two in the Worst Stuff section and then come back to this one. Now this is how you recut a trailer! The final trailer for Django Unchained rocks some of the same imagery and styling of the other promo pieces, but tosses in some new footage and shows it off with a fresh perspective suggesting Django’s got a lot to offer.

The Worst Stuff

1. Pacific Rim Kaiju Attack: I’m still all for found footage and disaster movies, but Pacific Rim’s “Kaiju Attack” viral video looks way too familiar. In fact, it didn’t make me curious about Guillermo del Toro’s latest, rather just made me want to rewatch Cloverfield.

2.  Texas Chainsaw 3D Trailer: The first trailer for Texas Chainsaw 3D wasn’t half bad, which means this second trailer isn’t in the bottom three because it’s a poorly cut piece, but rather it’s merely a shorter version of what we’ve already seen. At this point we know we’re getting more Leatherface and we’re excited for it, but with just about a month to go until the release, it’s time to reveal what makes this installment stand out.

3. [REC] 4: Apocalypse Teaser: Making a highlight reel of footage from the first two films and calling it a teaser trailer for the fourth absolutely will not make me forget about the travesty that is [REC] 3: Genesis. Thanks to Shock Till You Drop for translating that closing tagline, but after [REC] 3 entirely uprooted and dismantled a particularly stable and effective horror franchise, "You know it and know the place. It's time to leave,” is the last thing I want to hear.
