Here's a little casting rumor that's beginning to circulate online, but unlike some other ones this particular rumor is gaining steam in a way that feels like an announcement may be imminent. Is Disney/Lucasfilm about to announce Benedict Cumberbatch as the first major actor to officially join the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII?
That's the rumor circulating via The Film Chronicles, which may not legitimize it much since the site isn't very well known, except for the fact that it's a rumor being whispered about by a lot of people, not just them. Also, Cumberbatch reteaming with J.J. Abrams makes a lot of sense since they just worked together on Star Trek Into Darkness, and also because Cumberbatch is one of today's hottest, most in-demand actors. For example, the guy is in, like, three or four movies premiering at this year's Toronto International Film Festival alone.
So if Benedict Cumberbatch joins Star Wars: Episode VII, who will he be playing? Well, he's not going to play one of the offspring of Luke Skywalker or Leia and Han Solo, since those roles will go to younger folks. But considering the fact that he played such a good villain in Star Trek Into Darkness, it would make the most sense to see Cumberbatch sign on as some kind of political member who turns bad, or just a straight-up Sith Lord, aka the dude who takes over for the baddest of bad guys, Darth Vader.
Say what you want about the way they used Cumberbatch as Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness, but you can't deny his intense screen presence. The man is a powerful force in that film, and every second he's on-screen he demands your attention. Abrams is going to need someone as intense as Cumberbatch since the next Star Wars villain will be following in the footsteps of one of the greatest movie villains of all time. Assuming Cumberbatch isn't some alternate-universe Vader (let's leave that plot device for the Star Trek franchise, please), the guy could make for a pretty badass opponent in the sequel.
Of course, that's IF there's any truth to this, and until the studio comes out and makes it all official, we're just spitballing here. If true, though, we definitely support Cumberbatch as either a good guy or a bad guy, but hopefully a bad guy cause he's really good at being bad.
What do you think? Do you like Cumberbatch in the next Star Wars sequel? And what role would you like to see him play?
